Feaster Five, 1995
|
The Eighth Feaster Five drew 8,000 runners. It had become New England's 5th largest race. Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Greg Meyer, and Jack Fultz were there, and so was Marty Liquori and ESPN. The first 6,500 entrants received sweatshirts (not long-sleeve t-shirts), and every finisher received a full-size apple pie. That's 8,000 pies. Joan won the women's race in 27:39, and Bill was first master in 25:42. Jack came in at 27:37 (straining hard to beat Joan). The men's race was won by George Yiannelis in 24:07, just ahead of Dave Dunham's 24:08 and Joe Rocha's 24:10. The sky was clear but the temperature dropped below freezing during the race and the wind picked up. After the event was over, Race Director Dave McGillivray expressed the thoughts of many -- "It's not just a race. It's a happening. It's a tradition. It's a fundraiser for charity." But this was to be the last year that Marshalls served as title sponsor, ending a three-year span from 1993 through 1995 when the Feaster Five became, in Dave McGillivray's words, "a tradition." Marshalls was acquired by TJMaxx and moved out of Andover, host site for the race, and the Eagle-Tribune stepped in as presenting sponsor in 1996. |
